The "Magellan Report" is a research initiated by the artists Pablo Mollenhauer and Alejandra Pérez in Punta Arenas on the shores of the Magellan Strait. It intends to shape an investigative para-academic collective whose focus is to enquire the sub-polar area of the Magellan strait region (53°28′S 70°47′W). The project draws together artists, curators, scientists, theorists and activists to build from a heterogeneous range of practices and disciplines a series of reports about the human as geological agents through the question how do we become geological? These reports aim to generate a series of aesthetic and theoretical works on speculative geology, geohistories, the subjectivities rising from fuel, the geological present, spatial politics, contested territories and future imaginaries of the region.
The project is a commemoration of the anniversary of the 500 years of the first western navigation through the strait. This date marks the beginning of discursive constructions on the region centred around human perspectives, and European cosmovisions that are still prevalent in the region. This dominant colonial subjectivity, that has had an effect in the devastation of original population and ecosystems, derives from a particular nexus of epistemic, technological, social and political-economic connections that are at the base of the contemporaneous reality of the Petrocapitalism that dominate the region. This Petrocapitalism, whose conspicuousness is manifested materially for instance in automobile debris and car tuning hobbies, represents the heightened hierarchical relations of humans, the continued violence of white supremacy, patriarchy, heterosexism, which has exacerbated the violence inflicted upon the non-human world.
The project looks for re-imagining the human through the biological and the geological in order to subvert traditional historical scientific, productive and poetic discourse, in order to detour their habit to think objects as distinct from the processes of their emergence and decay. With this purpose, we think is necessary to find new meanings through a speculative dimension and practices of "making do" as a mode of subverting traditional uses of scientific and representational technologies in order to decolonize the land from common narratives and depictions from which has historically been associated.
In resume, the project looks for a range of discursive, visual and sensual strategies that are not confined by the regimes of scientific objectivity, poetic naturalism, and political moralism, to looks for aesthetic responses by means of subverting epistemologies and of re-subjectivize technologies of dominance as a form to encounter interactions and intra-actions and bring them into visibility as a mean of de-colonizing the 500 years of the European "discovery" of the Magellan Strait.
El "Magellan report" es una investigación iniciada por los artistas Pablo Mollenhauer y Alejandra Pérez en Punta Arenas, a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes. Pretende dar forma a un colectivo para-académico de investigación cuyo objetivo es investigar el área subpolar de la región del estrecho de Magallanes (53 ° 28′S 70 ° 47′W). El proyecto reúne a artistas, curadores, científicos, teóricos y activistas para construir a partir de una gama heterogénea de prácticas y disciplinas una serie de informes sobre lo humano como agentes geológicos a través de la pregunta ¿Cómo llegamos a ser geológicos? Estos informes pretenden generar una serie de trabajos estéticos y teóricos sobre geología especulativa, geohistorías, subjetividades derivadas del combustible, presente geológico, política espacial, territorios en disputa y futuros imaginarios de la región.
El proyecto es una conmemoración del aniversario de los 500 años de la primera navegación occidental a través del estrecho. Esta fecha marca el comienzo de las construcciones discursivas en la región centradas en las perspectivas humanas y en las cosmovisiones europeas que aún prevalecen en la región. Esta subjetividad colonial dominante, que ha tenido un efecto en la devastación de la población y los ecosistemas originales, deriva de un nexo particular de conexiones epistémicas, tecnológicas, sociales y político-económicas que están en la base de la realidad contemporánea del petrocapitalismo que domina la región. Este petrocapitalismo, cuya notoriedad se manifiesta materialmente, por ejemplo, en los escombros de automóviles y en los pasatiempos de "tuneo" de automóviles, representa las relaciones jerárquicas enfatizadas por los humanos, la violencia continuada de la supremacía blanca, el patriarcado, el heterosexismo, que ha exacerbado la violencia infligida sobre el mundo más que humano.
El proyecto busca reimaginar lo humano a través de lo biológico y lo geológico para subvertir el discurso histórico, científico y poético histórico tradicional, a fin de desviar su hábito de pensar objetos como distintos de los procesos de su aparición y decadencia. Con este propósito, creemos que es necesario encontrar nuevos significados a través de una dimensión especulativa y prácticas de "hacer" como un modo de subvertir los usos tradicionales de las tecnologías científicas y representativas con el fin de descolonizar la tierra de narraciones comunes y representaciones a partir de las cuales históricamente ha sido asociado.
En resumen, el proyecto busca una gama de estrategias discursivas, visuales y sensoriales que no están limitadas por los regímenes de objetividad científica, naturalismo poético y moralismo político, y busca respuestas estéticas a través de la subversión de las epistemologías y de la subjetivización de las tecnologías de la dominación como una forma de encontrar interacciones e interacciones internas y darles visibilidad como medio para descolonizar los 500 años del "descubrimiento" europeo del Estrecho de Magallanes.
